Mbugiti Community recently brought together young people from Mbugiti Location and the surrounding areas for a youth mentorship program aimed at helping young people make informed decisions about their education, careers, businesses, and future.
The initiative was organized for young people under the age of 30, including students, recent graduates, job seekers, young professionals, and those considering further education or looking for opportunities to enter the job market.
Based in Mbugiti Location, Kariara Ward, Gatanga Constituency, Murang’a County, Mbugiti Community is a community-based organization working to improve the livelihoods of local residents by connecting them with the resources, knowledge, and opportunities they need to grow and develop.
Creating Opportunities Through Mentorship
The mentorship event brought together professionals, business people, public leaders, and other accomplished individuals who shared their personal experiences with the young people.
Rather than focusing only on what young people should do, the speakers shared their own journeys — including the experiences, challenges, decisions, and opportunities that shaped their careers and lives.
The discussions gave the participants an opportunity to see different pathways to success and to understand that there is no single route to building a meaningful career or creating a sustainable livelihood.
Among those who addressed the youth was the Deputy Governor of Murang’a County, Mr. Steven Munania, who shared his experiences and encouraged young people to make constructive use of the opportunities available to them.
The program also featured the Member of Parliament for Gatanga, Edward Muriu, who spoke to the young people about personal development, opportunities, and the importance of making deliberate choices about their future.
Mr. Maina, Branch Manager at Unaitas, brought a financial perspective to the mentorship, helping the youth understand the importance of financial knowledge and making informed decisions as they begin their working and entrepreneurial journeys.
The participants also heard from Dr. Winnie, a dentist based in Gatura, who shared her professional journey and experiences in building a career in healthcare.
Catherine Nyambura Karanja, an ecotourism and agri-tourism specialist in charge of Gatura Greens, demonstrated how opportunities can be created around local resources, tourism, agriculture, and community development.
The technology and financial services sector was represented by Angela Githae, a fintech expert, who shared insights from her experience and highlighted some of the possibilities available to young people in the changing digital economy.
The mentorship also featured Captain Vinctor Ngujiri of Kenya Airways, who shared his journey into aviation and gave the young participants an opportunity to learn about a career path that many may not have considered accessible to them.
Njoroge, a businessman and aspiring MCA, also spoke to the youth about his experiences in business and his journey towards public service.
Other guests and professionals also contributed to the discussions, creating a diverse range of perspectives for the young people who attended.
Helping Young People See Possibilities
One of the important aspects of the program was the diversity of the speakers. The young people were able to hear from individuals working in public service, finance, healthcare, aviation, tourism, technology, business, and other areas.
For students, the discussions provided an opportunity to think about their education and the careers they may want to pursue. For graduates and job seekers, the conversations offered practical perspectives on navigating the workplace and identifying opportunities. For those interested in business, the experiences shared by entrepreneurs and professionals provided another perspective on building a livelihood.
The underlying message throughout the mentorship was that young people can make meaningful progress by understanding their current circumstances, identifying opportunities around them, developing relevant skills, and taking deliberate steps towards their goals.
