The county wants businesses to follow a clear process and complete applications early to avoid disruptions.
County Opens Applications for 2026 Licenses
The county has opened applications for liquor premises permits. Business owners must submit both renewal and new applications online through the county services portal.
Applicants must complete submissions within seven days, ending on 3rd March 2026. The county urges operators to apply early instead of waiting for the final day.
Online submission allows faster processing and keeps licensing records organized.
Public Objection Stage Starts After Applications Close
After the application window closes, the county will publish a list of applicants on its official portal. This step starts the objection period, which runs from 4th to 10th March 2026.
Residents, chiefs, and police officers can raise concerns during this period. The county uses this stage to gather local feedback and identify businesses that may require closer review.
Compliant Businesses Qualify for Auto-Renewal
The county will automatically renew licenses for businesses that meet compliance requirements and receive no objections.
Owners who qualify for auto-renewal will not undergo physical inspections. They only need to complete payment starting 11th March 2026.
This approach rewards compliant operators and allows county officers to focus on higher-risk applications.

New and Flagged Premises Must Undergo Inspection
The county will carry out physical inspections for:
-
New applicants
-
Establishments that attract objections
Inspection teams will include licensing officers, public health officers, police, fire officers, and area chiefs. These teams will check safety standards, public health compliance, and operational suitability.
Licensing Committee Makes Final Decisions
After reviewing applications and inspection reports, the Licensing Committee will approve, defer, or reject each application.
The county expects to complete all decisions by 31st March 2026.
County Warns Against Operating Without a Valid License
The county has warned businesses against operating without a valid 2026 license after the March deadline.
Authorities will close non-compliant premises and take legal action where necessary. Business owners therefore need to complete the process on time to avoid penalties.
Why These Guidelines Matter to Local Businesses
Liquor licensing affects many small businesses in Gatanga and across Murang’a County. Clear rules help traders plan ahead, protect customers, and maintain legal operations.
By setting strict timelines and clear procedures, the county aims to improve accountability while supporting responsible business growth.
